How to create a WhatsApp link

A WhatsApp link, also called a click to chat link, opens a chat with a phone number when someone taps it. It works from a website, a social profile, an email, a QR code or an ad, and the person does not need to save your number.

The address has a fixed format: https://wa.me/ followed by the number. You can add a first message after it. Whatslynk builds the address for you and gives you a short link and QR code, but it helps to know how it works.

What to know

  • The number: international format

Write the full number with the country code, and nothing else: no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes and no leading zeros. For example 15551234567 for a US number or 919876543210 for an Indian one.

  • The address

Put the number after https://wa.me/ so the link looks like https://wa.me/15551234567.

  • The message (optional)

Add ?text= and your message, with spaces written as %20. For example https://wa.me/15551234567?text=Hello%20there.

  • It opens the app

On a phone the link opens WhatsApp. On a computer it opens WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.

Step by step

  1. 1

Write the number in international format

Country code first, then the number without the leading zero. Remove plus signs, spaces, dashes and brackets.

  2. 2

Add the message if you want one

Type it as plain text. Special characters and spaces must be encoded, which is easy to get wrong by hand.

  3. 3

Build the link, or let Whatslynk do it

Enter the country and number in the generator and it creates the correct address, a short link and a QR code.

  4. 4

    Test it

Open the link on a phone and on a computer, and check that the number and message are right before you share it.
